The Somatic Improvisation Experience
Feel supported, grounded and connected in surrounding environments.
Soothe the Nervous System by attending to the inner landscape of the Soma.
Cultivate and embody your unique imagination.
In the first phase of an explorative Somatic Movement/Dance practice, participants are guided through foundational principles and practices focused on easing and freeing excess tension and blocks within the soma. Together, we playfully explore, towards a sense of grounded yet expansive holistic support. Through interoceptive practices, and methods of attaining greater core support and body-organization, we may find freedom through dynamism.
I utilize intuitive guided imagery, inspired by organic elements and the Space-Time continuum, while pulling foundational notes from established codified methods. Some methods I’ve been inspired by include, but are not limited to, Bartenieff Fundamentals, Anatomy Trains (relating to the myofascial system and energy meridians), Gaga Movement Language, various Improvisation techniques, various modalities of breath work and bodywork, Simonson technique, physical theatre warm ups, Laban Movement Theory and Laban’s links to Jungian archetypal embodiment research.
We gain greater access to foundational principles of flowing embodiment by familiarizing ourselves with efficient body organizations and actions, driven by the support of both internal and external space. The functional foundation practice phase organically leads us into somatic shifts of attention and intention, which support the relationship between mobility and stability. From a structural focus of the body, we shift into a qualitative exploration—of effortful variation, investigating our personal and interconnected relationships to time, space, weight, flow, and shape.
We expand upon newfound awareness by progressing into a holistic dance between grounding, centering, shifting, diving into creative processes, and reflecting back-within a collaborative flow. Throughout these practices, we may discover personal meanings behind the shapes we make with our bodies, the pathways we use to form them, effortful qualities in which we function through, and preferential alignment patterns we may have.
Throughout a customized session, optional hands-on guiding cues will be offered, for the purposes of refining proprioceptive and kinesthetic sensitivity, while establishing safe, effective alignments and movements.
Throughout the practice, we may compassionately challenge our own patterns of bias, judgement, and perceived limitations around functionality and expressivity.
Leaving the practice, we may be stirred with even more curiosity than we entered with. And so it goes, as we are ever evolving beings.
The query always remains... How may we continue to positively evolve our holding habits and movement patterns, here and now, with our newly discovered information?
